A solo-cello recital cannot help focusing on Bach’s suites, that perennial cornerstone of the instrument’s repertoire. In this case, however, Bach’s Suite No. 3 and Suite No. 4 frame a not-so-popular work, the Cello Sonata that György Ligeti wrote in Hungary. He was no hard-core avant-gardist yet, but just a young man, who had recently completed his music studies and loved Bartók’s and Kodály’s music.
