The young duo of Aubree Oliverson and Julia Hamos offers a program split into two parts. They begin with Dvorak's Romantic Pieces, combining beautiful melodies and hints of folk dance steps, to then tackle Brahms’ monumental, conceptual Second Sonata, Op. 100. Now we enter another musical realm, with two of Bartók’s short-piece collections, the austere solo-piano Fifteen Peasant Songs and the Romanian Dances, seven accurate transcriptions of music he recorded on the wax cylinder phonograph. In the middle, we hear two little jewels penned by two virtuosos—a youthful Debussy Lied that Jascha Heifetz transcribed for violin and one of the humorous “fake oldies” Fritz Kreisler created to thumb his nose to the period reverence toward ancient masters whom no one had heard but by name.
