Great Romantic Cello Sonatas

Chopin’s and Rachmaninov’s cello sonatas make a fascinating comparison. One can sense that the latter is a sort of love letter to the former; it inherited its roles — a tumultuous piano and a lyric cello — , its formal plan — four movements in the same order — and even its key. Each sonata is preceded by a short piano piece by György Ligeti focusing on a technical problem, but also aiming at resurrecting Romantic sounds, echoes of that same world that has long disappeared.
