This year the traditional Palio del Baradello will take place in a reduced form.
The projects for the 40th edition were very different and the work had started several months ago, then the coronavirus emergency imposed a stop and a necessary change of program.
No historical parade, no races. The Palio 2020 sees for now confirmed only the concert of the Celtic harps with the Celtic Harp Orchestra of the master Fabius Constable.
The Palio del Baradello is a historical reenactment celebrating the anniversary of the landing of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in the city of Como, in 1159, during the war between Como and Milan.
This medieval festival, much loved by both inhabitants and tourists, refers to a historical episode: it is March 1159 and Frederick Barbarossa lands in Como on the secret invitation of Bishop Ardizzone. A skilled strategist, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire is escorted by a few armed men who accompany him on a reconnaissance tour along the banks of the Lake Como. The defences of the villages and places suitable for battle are verified. Also waiting for him is Beatrice of Burgundy, his second wife. The next day, the reunited imperial couple head towards the port of Como welcomed by the people in celebration.
