The exhibition
Famous all over the world for having dressed the most prestigious brides of the international jet set, Lorenzo Riva is also the undisputed master of pret a porter, high fashion dresses and sensual evening dresses. The Silk Museum of Como dedicates its first solo exhibition to the designer, on display from 29 October 2019 to 31 March 2020.
The exhibition ll maestro is in the soul. Lorenzo Riva - Fifty years of high fashion, curated by Paolo Aquilini, celebrates the half century of the master's activity, displaying clothes, sketches, international press reviews.
The exhibition also highlights, for the first time, the eclectic genius of the designer from Monza through his little known but incredible collaborations. The exhibition is based on a long and extensive cataloguing of the designer's archive, consisting of clothes, accessories, photographs and sketches collected over the years.
All the elements on display that collect and express a tribute to his multifaceted activity, which also touches on various collaborations with the world of cinema: I panni sporchi di Monicelli (1999), Il tempo delle mimose di Bracco (2013) and La migliore offerta di Tornatore (2015) are the titles of some films in which Riva dresses the actresses with his extraordinary clothes.
Among the characters dressed by Lorenzo Riva also movie stars such as Isabella Rossellini, Penelope Cruz, Jerry Hall, Chiara Mastroianni, just to name a few.
Active in the Milanese culture between the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, Riva boasts numerous collaborations with great contemporary artists who were protagonists of the Second Italian post-war period: the most prestigious, which is on display, is that with Mimmo Rotella, undisputed creator of Italian pop art.
Some of his clothes are in fact the direct reworking of famous paintings by the author of the most famous décollage in the world. Riva's artistic production from the Sixties to the present day is a temporal overview of changing genres and eras and the exhibition layout will focus on this: tracing in a complete sense the historical change in taste and style, the change in the aesthetic taste of fashion and the consequent stylistic evolution.
