The Sommariva Oratory is part of Villa Carlotta's area in Tremezzina, including the wonderful villa and botanical garden.
The structure, which arose as a private chapel attached to the villa, was purchased in 1801 by Giovanni Battista Sommariva. He was a rising personality of the Napoleonic government and a collector of neoclassical works of art.
The Sommariva family held the ownership of the residence until 1843, when the last heir Emilia Sommariva Seillière sold it to Marianna of Orange-Nassau. However, possession of the Oratory where the funerary monuments of her father-in-law Giovanni Battista and her husband Louis were placed was retained.
