The second stage of the Sentiero del Viandante (Wayfarer's Path) takes us from Lierna to Varenna. A walk in the nature characterized by breathtaking views.
The second stage of the Sentiero del Viandante, which runs between the municipalities of Lierna and Varenna, is a route that runs almost entirely through the woods, with several points from which you can enjoy beautiful views. It is necessary, however, to remember to stock up on drinks and food, as there are no refreshment points along the way.
From the Lierna train station, if you decide to arrive by train or park nearby, take Via Parodi and walk uphill until you reach the town hall. Here turn left and walk along the part of Via Parodi that passes next to the town hall until you reach Via Genico on the left. Take Via Genico, always going uphill, which then becomes Via Del Seminario, and you will arrive at a fork, where you have to turn left, following the orange sign of the Sentiero del Viandante.
You will arrive at a marked crossroads, turning left you will follow the low variant of the path, while going right the high variant.
Following the low variant through a muletrack, it will be reached the fraction of Giussana, crossing it always following the typical signs of the path it will be turned then to the right taking the path that climbs among the houses.
The path then comes out on an asphalted road, here you have to turn left following the road downhill, until you meet again the path that goes up on the right.
From here on, the path enters the wood and becomes steeper and steeper, offering from time to time spectacular views among the thick vegetation. The path is marked with orange brush strokes on the rocks that delimit it, in case you decide to walk the path in the autumn season be careful, because the leaves could deceive and cover the signs.
This part of the path is also called Sentiero 74, so you can also follow this indication.
When you reach the highest point of the path, in the Coria locality, you meet some old ruins and a house, here the path divides, following the left side you proceed for the low variant, while taking the right side you rejoin the high variant.
From this point the path begins to descend, with some passages sometimes quite narrow and a bit more difficult, with the presence of ropes and chains to help.
S'incontrare poi dei ruderi tra il bosco in località Roslina, da qui in avanti il sentiero diventa più agevolabile, con descendimenti più dolci e fondo meno accidentato.
Approaching the town of Varenna, following the low variant, the trail skirts the highway for a while, continuing along the path you pass near the source of the Fiumelatte, glimpsing the river further down among the vegetation, until you reach the ruins of Il Baluardo.
Here the path becomes even easier, until you arrive next to the cemetery of Varenna, beyond which you take Via Roma that will take you to the center of the town.
In order to reach the railway station, go through the whole of Via Roma, which then enters Viale Giovanni Polvani. Go on crossing all the village along Via Venini, until you reach a crossroads.
Turn right into Via per Esino and then left into Via alla Stazione, at the end of which you will reach the train station.
Both the departure and arrival towns are served by the Lecco - Sondrio railway network, so it is possible to reach the beginning of the itinerary and return by train. Near the train station there is a large parking lot, but in the summer season is to pay. You can find free parking along the surrounding streets, but it is advisable to always park near the station in order to facilitate the return to the car.
