Oratorio in three parts for soloists, choir and orchestra by Georg Friedrich Handel, HWV 56
Revision by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, K572 (1789)
The title of this oratory, inaugurating the 2020/2021 Night SeasonD'acqua e vita, was intended to give a seal of rebirth, marking a new start to the activities of the Teatro Sociale di Como, which has been closed since the end of February 2020
The Messiah is certainly one of the most famous oratorios, whether it is performed in the original version of 1741 (HWV 56), on an English text by Charles Jennes, or in the following versions, commissioned by Handel himself, or, as in this case, it is proposed in the revision by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Der Messias K 572) of 1789, which contemplates the clarinet and the use of wind instruments in the orchestra.
A monumental work with impressive sounds, the Messiah was conceived from the beginning to be a testimony of deep faith, to communicate the joy of hope and Resurrection, and has always been remembered for having one of the most famous and most performed choral sections in the world, the Halleluja.
